Rubber Import and Export in China2019.01.17

Rubber can be divided into natural rubber and synthetic rubber based on the different material source, and can be used in many aspects of our life.

Rubber Industry in China

China has become the world's largest producer, consumer and importer of rubber in recent years. According to the researchers, the main downstream industry of synthetic and natural rubber is the automotive industry which contributes over 70% of the rubber consumption in China. Driven by the steady development of the tire and other downstream products, the rubber industry in China is developing steadily in recent years.

China Rubber Supply & Demand

It can be seen through the data that the rubber supply in China cannot meet the large domestic demands. Therefore, the rubber industry in China is highly dependent on import from other countries. According to the China Customs, rubber import in 2017 is about 7.16 million MT, far ahead of the export volume of 0.28 million MT.

Natural Rubber in China

Affected by the climate and geographical conditions, the production of natural rubber in China is limited to Hainan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian Provinces, and highly rely on the import from the major international rubber producers. In 2017, the import of natural rubber in China is 2.79 million tons.

Synthetic Rubber in China

With the acceleration of China's tire industry and infrastructure, industrialized production has been achieved for eight types of synthetic rubber, i.e. styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), polybutadiene rubber (PBR), chloroprene rubber (CR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), butyl rubber (IIR), polyisoprene rubber (IR), ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and thermoplastic styrene butadiene rubber (SBCS).

The data also shows that the synthetic rubber import is rising rapidly from 2010 to 2017, which reflects the increasing domestic  demand for the synthetic rubber in China. In 2017, China has imported 4,363,941,862kg of synthetic rubber and major exporters include Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, USA, etc.

Future Trend

It’s expected that the rubber industry in China will see a steady growth in the upcoming years. From 2018 to 2022, China’s tire production will continue to rise and will drive the development of the synthetic rubber industry. On the other hand, due to the limited rubber resources, the rubber industry in China may be in an imbalance state between supply and demand, and the gap may reach more than 4.7 million tons by 2021.
